An aging bandstand in Kiwanis Park is coming down.
Last year, Johnson City received a Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthy Places grant totaling $750,000. Of that amount, $150,000 is earmarked for maintenance and $600,000 will help construct a play area at Kiwanis Park, located at 717 W. Market St.
Once complete, the finalized space will include a community pavilion, children's play areas, fitness stations and a swing set.
Part of that project involves demolishing the old bandstand, which has been in the park for decades and sits a short distance away from the site of the yet-to-be-constructed play area.
