ELIZABETHTON — How can a summer camp for children be operated that meets the Centers for Disease Control’s guidelines for social distancing and other safety recommendations to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)?
The Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition and the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department appear to have the answer. The two organizations are joining together to launch the “Summer Camp in a Box” series for seven consecutive weeks. It will start on Monday, July 6. The purpose of the camps is to help children remain engaged and active at a time when traditional summer camps are not being opened because of COVID-19.
Most camps are appropriate for rising kindergarten through fifth-grade students, with three camps being offered throughout the series to serve grades 6-12.
Boxes are packed for the week complete with a schedule of what to do (and how) for each day of the week. A free lunch for the participant on the pickup date is also provided. Pickups will take place at the Elizabethton Recreation Center, 300 W. Mill St., each Monday beginning Monday, July 6, through Monday Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. until noon, only.
A limited number of boxes will be available, and they will be given on a first come/first served basis. Participation is free. The schedule will be as follows:
Week One: July 6-11 Beach or Bust (Grades K-5) or Mental Health Marathon (Grades 6-12).
Week Two: July 13-17 Reboot! Fortnite Fun (Grades K-5).
Week Three: July 20-25 Jr. Chef (Grades K-5) or Managing Stress (Grades 6-12).
Week Four: July 27-31 To the Rescue: Super Hero Week (Grades K-5).
Week Five: Aug. 3-7 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall (Grades K-5).
Week Six: Aug. 10-14 Take Me Out to the Ballgame! (Grades K-5).
Week Seven: Aug. 17-21 Get S’more Out of Life (Grades 1-12).
