Charges were pending against a teenage driver who crashed at high speed through a cable barrier on Interstate 26, sending two of four minor passengers to a hospital, early Monday morning. One of the minors was listed in critical condition, Johnson City police said.
About 2:40 a.m., police went to the crash scene in the westbound lane of I-26 near Plymouth Road in south Johnson City. Police said a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse was traveling west on I-26 at high speed and lost control in a curve, going under the steel cable barriers and into the median before coming to rest on the interstate.
A passenger in the rear seat was ejected, suffering life-threatening injuries. A second passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. Both were taken to Johnson City Medical Center.
The Johnson City Police Department Traffic Homicide Team’s investigation is continuing.
