Though he said he was trying to take it "nice and slow," UT-Martin cross country athlete Will Cahill was first to cross the line at the 2021 Up and At 'Em Turkey Trot in Johnson City, finishing the race in 16:05 — the fastest time since 2018.

"I was just kind of cruising it, taking it nice and slow," said Cahill. "I haven't run for a week, so I was just coming back to see how it goes."

Cahill, who used to live in the area and still has family here, said the win was a great way to kick off Thanksgiving.

"(I feel) pretty good," Cahill said of his win. "That was the goal."

After last year's Turkey Trot was made virtual due to the pandemic, more than 2,800 people came out to run and walk the 3.11-mile race that starts on State of Franklin, makes its way through the Tree Streets and ends at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

Benton Bickerton (16:36), Tanner Smith (16:53), Morgan Greene (17:49) and Noah Ellis (18:09) rounded out the top-five finishers.
