A pedestrian died after being struck twice on Interstate 26 in Johnson City early Wednesday morning.

Police said Betty L. Chavez, 54, had run into the path of an eastbound pickup near mile marker 26.

The 1999 Dodge Dakota’s driver, Larry Banner, immediately pulled onto the shoulder to check on the woman. While Chavez was lying in the roadway, she was run over by a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Adam Yarber. Yarber also immediately pulled onto the shoulder.

Police said Chavez died at the scene, and her body was taken to East Tennessee State University’s William L Jenkins Forensic Center for autopsy.

Neither driver was injured.

Police were called about 4:45 a.m. The Johnson City Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team and the Criminal Investigations Division responded and was continuing the investigation.
