HAMPTON — A Chattanooga man was killed Sunday evening when a car going the wrong way hit his car head-on on U.S. Highway 19E near the intersection with Gap Creek Road.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Thomas Taylor, 31, Chattanooga, was driving a 2004 BMW 525 sedan northbound on U.S. 19E in the proper lane.

A THP investigator said a 1999 Lincoln Towncar driven by Charles Richardson, 53, was speeding toward him going southbound in the northbound lane. The investigator said Richardson had previously fled from a traffic stop by an Elizabethton Police Department officer and had driven so recklessly that the officer stopped pursuing him. The Towncar then collided head on with the BMW.

A passenger in Richardson’s car was identified as Brittany Puckett, 27, Kingsport.

Both Richardson and Puckett were injured in the crash. Charges were pending against Richardson.
