The driver of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring was identified as Valerie A. Hodge, Johnson City. The driver of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was identified as Derek C. Tyson of Kingsport.
Patrolman David Johnson of the Elizabethton Police Department reported that when he arrived on the scene, both drivers were entrapped in their cars and the Carter County Rescue Squad and the Carter County vehicle extraction team were called to the scene.
Johnson said both vehicles had extensive front-end damage and were disabled. He said both drivers were transported to the Johnson City Medical Center with serious injuries.
Witnesses told Johnson that Hodge’s vehicle was being driven closely behind them and was swerving in the road. Another witness said the Sebring passed her on a double yellow line on the road, then struck the Cobalt head-on. Another witness said the Sebring was in the wrong lane at the time of the collision.
Officers said Hodge did not have insurance on the Sebring. Charges are pending in the incident.
