UNICOI — The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for a man who allegedly fled from police in Unicoi County Wednesday night.

According to Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley, a deputy monitoring traffic on Temple Hill Road spotted a car going over 100 miles per hour and attempted to pull the car over. During the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Christopher Saults, attempted to flee by driving on the wrong side of the interstate near exit 40 in Erwin.

Deputies “tried to catch up with him, but he was outrunning them,” Hensley said. “An officer at exit 43 observed the vehicle exit and went out to Temple Hill Road, but was unable to see which way the vehicle turned.”

Hensley said a bystander flagged down the officer told the officer Saults fled onto Spivey Mountain Road, where they found Saults’ vehicle abandoned off of Edwards Cemetery Road less than a mile from the Tennessee/North Carolina border.

Shortly after nightfall, a woman found standing in the road across the state line told Unicoi County Sheriff’s deputies she had been in the vehicle with Saults, and told authorities Saults had fled again. Yancey County Sheriff’s Office deputies searched overnight for him.

Hensley said the woman told officers both she and Saults were using drugs, and the woman, who’s identity wasn’t released, was transported to the hospital.

In addition to being wanted by police in Unicoi, Saults has felony warrants for his arrest in Carter County.

According to the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, Saults is approximately 6’4” tall with dark hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on the man’s whereabouts is asked to call the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 682-2124 or the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department at (423) 743-1850.
