ELIZABETHTON —A Thomasville, N.C., man has been charged with kidnapping a woman and taking her from North Carolina to Elizabethton.

Charles Matthew Riddle was arrested by the Elizabethton Police Department on Sunday on a charge of aggravated kidnapping.

Officer Joshua Baggett said police were called to the Waffle House around noon on Sunday on a complaint about a man and woman leaving the restaurant without paying for their order.

Baggett said when he arrived, he spoke with the district manager, who said she was not worried about the meal, but with the woman who appeared to have been involved in a struggle with the man and appeared to be going with him against her will.

Capt. Lincoln Orellana soon found the couple in the parking lot at Walmart. The woman said she had gotten into an argument with Riddle in the Walmart parking lot, where they had spent the night in a car. She said Riddle had punched her in the eye and threatened to kill her.

Riddle was arrested and transported to the Carter County Jail. He appeared in Sessions Court on Monday.

Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed a public defender for Riddle and increased his bond to $50,000. Bowers ordered Riddle to have no contact with the victim. Riddle’s next court appearance was set for Dec. 17.
