ELIZABETHTON — Former Carter County Deputy David Ryan died Thursday. He was one of the longest serving officers in the sheriff’s department, both as a regular deputy and as a reserve deputy.

“It was a sad day in the department when we got the news,” Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said.

Lunceford recalled that when he first began his career, Ryan was already at work with the department. Although he later found employment outside the department, Ryan remained as a reserve deputy. At one time he held the rank of major in the reserves.

Ryan was also one of the first canine officers for the department. His dog was named Diesel.

The sheriff’s department’s Facebook also commented on the death of Ryan: “Deputy Ryan served with the Sheriff's Office for more than 30 years as a Deputy and Reserve Deputy. We want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for this man's service. Rest in peace David. We have the watch.”
