Two local men have been indicted on charges they stole a sports car later found destroyed in Kentucky.

In a news release, Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said Friday the 2010 Mustang Shelby was stolen April 10 from a garage on Charlie Carson Road in Jonesborough, where the men had forced open a door.

Sheriff’s investigators found evidence left at the scene and sent some items to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab for analysis. That led to the arrests of Shannon Lynn Harris, 40, 511 Holston Ave., Erwin, and Christopher Eugene Hammett, 44, Limestone.

Graybeal investigators questioned both men, who confessed to taking the stolen Mustang. Kentucky State Police later found the car destroyed in Pike County, Kentucky.

A Washington County grand jury indicted both Harris and Hammett on charges of aggravated burglary and theft over $60,000. Both were served presentment warrants Friday and booked into the Washington County Detention Center. Appearances in Criminal Court were set for Feb. 10.

The investigation remained ongoing and more charges were possible, Graybeal said. Anyone with additional information about the case was asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 423-788-1414.
