Todd Darrell Briggs, 35, 302 Boone Road, was arrested Wednesday with the assistance of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.
On the morning of Aug. 16, deputies went to Franklin Woods Hospital after the woman suffered second- and third-degree burns on her head, arms and torso. She later was flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville because of the seriousness of her injuries.
During an altercation with his wife at their home, Graybeal said, Briggs doused rubbing alcohol on the bedroom floor and his wife. Briggs then lit the rubbing alcohol with a butane lighter, burning his wife and damaging the home.
Investigators presented the case to a Washington County Grand Jury, and a true bill was returned charging Briggs with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated arson.
He was held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond awaiting a Criminal Court set for Dec. 2.
Briggs had been jailed in Washington County on April 18, 2016, and Jan. 6, 2017, each time on a violation of probation charge. The Tennessee Department of Corrections’ felony offender website lists his status as inactive, having completed a sentence on Nov. 24.
