An Erwin man chewed through the wires of a police cruiser’s camera after his arrest Friday in a drunken confrontation on South Roan Street, Johnson City police said in a news release.

Brian Benfro, 27, was arrested after police were called to 2607 S. Roan St. about 4:10 p.m. to check on a report of a possibly intoxicated man getting into vehicles and running across the road. Police said they found Renfro sitting in the passenger side of a vehicle across the street.

Renfro got out of the vehicle, yelled obscenities at a friend and approached police. He then began pulling items from his pockets. Police asked him to keep his hands out of his pockets.

He asked police to take him to jail for being drunk, so they handcuffed him. He resisted arrest and tried to run away, kicking an officer’s leg in the process. After a brief struggle, police were able to place him in the cruiser. He then chewed through the camera’s wires enough to break them, rendering the cruiser’s rear camera inoperable.

Renfro was charged with simple assault on an officer, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, resisting arrest and felony vandalism. He was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $8,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Monday.
