MORRISTOWN — The Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who drowned in Cherokee Lake Tuesday evening as 51-year-old Leroy Simpson of Gray.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a drowning around 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday and said Simpson was fishing with his father in Cherokee Lake when the drowning occurred.

Simpson and his father were attempting to unload their boat at the Cherokee Park Hamblen Marina boat launch when it “floated away.” The man’s father told the Sheriff’s Office his son swam out and attempted to get back into the boat when he went under water and didn’t resurface.

Simpson’s father was an elderly man and wasn’t able to help his son.

The Morristown and Bean Station rescue squads recovered Simpson’s body from the lake at about 7 p.m.
