Police charged a convicted felon with aggravated kidnapping and other offenses Tuesday after a chase in Johnson City.

In a news release, police said Melvin Chism, 44, ran out the back door of a residence in the 600 block of North Barton Street when they arrived to check on a report of a man inside waving a gun.

Police caught Chism after a brief foot chase. They also found a gun and about 1 ounce of methamphetamine in the area where he ran.

The victims told police Chism had gone to their residence and became angry with them. They told police he showed a gun and would not let them leave their residence.

Chasm, 5724 French Market Circle North, Memphis, was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping, possession of a weapon by convicted felon, possession of a weapon during a dangerous felony, and possession of methamphetamine for resale. He was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $80,000 bond with a Sessions Court appearance set for Wednesday.
