Johnson County authorities are searching for a man they said held a woman hostage and raped her.

In a release to media outlets Thursday afternoon, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said John Ross Gray is wanted and the subject of a multi-agency manhunt. He reportedly held a woman against her will and raped her multiple times before fleeing on foot.

The sheriff’s department searched for Gray using aircraft, but he was not found by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Carter County law enforcement is assisting in the search because of Gray’s unspecified ties to the county, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is also helping.

Gray is a white male, 5-feet, 11-inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information that might help find Gray to call 423-727-7761.
