ELIZABETHTON — A man who was wanted for the past three years on charges of robbery with a firearm and aggravated assault was arrested and had his first day in court.

Robert Lee Qualls Jr., 213 Beartrack Road, Jonesborough, was arrested on charges stemming from a March 31, 2016, incident at 2807 S. Roan Street, lot 34, which is in a part of Johnson City that is in Carter County.

Back in 2016, a mother and father told Johnson City Police Department officers they had just been to their daughter’s residence and picked up her possessions because she had just been incarcerated.

Shortly after they arrived at their home, they told police that their daughter’s boyfriend, known to them as “Chatt” arrived and demanded the parents give him the shoes they had taken from their daughter’s residence.

The girl’s mother said she showed Chatt that she did not take any shoes. At that point, she said a second man grabbed the mother and threw her to the ground. She said he then punched her in the head with a pistol and held it to her head.

Hearing the altercation, the woman’s husband stepped into the room to see what was going on. He saw her struggling with the man. When he attempted to help his wife, he said Chatt punched him in the mouth with a pistol.

They said both men fled the residence when a neighbor saw the violence and called 911.

Johnson City investigators said the woman went through a book of mug shots and identified Chatt as Robert Qualls Jr.

On Tuesday night, Deputy Justin Johnson of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department went to the Washington County Detention Center and served the three-year-old warrant on Qualls. He was then transported to the Carter County Detention Center.

Qualls was arraigned in Carter County Sessions Court on Wednesday morning, where Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed a public defender for him. His next court appearance was set for May 3.
