Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents have been called in to investigate an overnight police shooting in Greeneville.

According to information released by the TBI, Greeneville Police Department officers exchanged gunfire with a man after following a driver fleeing a traffic stop to an apartment at 114 Mason St.

After the driver fled, the female passenger identified him as Joshua Howard and took the officers to the apartment, at which she said she and Howard lived. When the two officers entered the apartment, they reportedly found another man who, for reasons still being investigated by the TBI, pulled a gun on the officers and shot at them.

In the shootout, both of the officers and the man were struck. The man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The two officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The state agents are still working to identify the dead man.

Howard was later found by police and arrested.

Citing agency policy, the TBI declined to identify the officers involved in the shooting.
