ELIZABETHTON — Law enforcement officers took precautions against a potential armed standoff Sunday, but things ended with a peaceful surrender.

A woman reported that a man had barricaded himself in a bathroom and was armed with a rifle. She said he had hit her in the head, placed the rifle to her ear and threatened to kill her.

Deputies from the Carter County Sheriff’s Department and the Elizabethton Police Department responded and set up a perimeter. The deputies said the man was found on the back porch with no weapon. He was quickly taken into custody and identified as Tony Campbell, 58, 188 Dan Cole Road.

Deputies discovered a rifle hidden behind the water heater in the bathroom. A records check indicated that he had been convicted of vehicular homicide in 1981. Campbell was then charged with aggravated assault and a felon in possession of a weapon.

Campbell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Sessions Court on April 16.
