BUTLER — The Carter County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man Sunday on charges he assaulted a woman and took their two children.

According to a press release issued by Thomas Gray, public information officer for the sheriff’s department, 30-year-old Michael Lawrence Carpenter was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, resisting arrest and elder abuse.

Gray said deputies were called to Whaleytown around 3:20 p.m., where they met a woman who told them Carpenter had assaulted her, pushed her into a barbed wire fence and took two children from her. Gray said Carpenter is the biological father of the children, but the woman showed deputies court documents stating she has sole custody of the children.

Deputies then went to Carpenter’s home, where they found him and the two children. Carpenter was then taken into custody.

Carpenter was held in pretrial custody in the Carter County Detention Center under $41,000 bond. He is scheduled to answer the charges in Sessions Court on April 5.
