MOUNTAIN CITY — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the Friday afternoon shooting of 3-year-old Ariel Salaices.

“It is still green,” Sheriff Edward Tester said of his department’s investigation of the case. “It appears to have been a stray round that hit her.”

The sheriff said the little girl was playing on her swing set at home when she fell. Her father was nearby and went to pick her up and found his daughter was badly wounded.

Tester said she was rushed by EMS to Johnson County Community Hospital. The child was then flown by Wings Air Rescue to Johnson City Medical Center and then on to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, where the sheriff said Saliaces remains in critical condition.

Tester said his department is continuing to investigate the case. He does not yet have the bullet that struck the girl, so he does not know what type of gun was involved.
