ELIZABETHTON — Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said he called off a search for a small child in the Watauga River after questions arose about the reliability of the only report received about the child.

Lunceford said the man told deputies he saw a 3-year-old girl struggling in the river. He said he came to the girl’s aid, but only managed to pull off her backpack before the current swept her from him.

Lunceford said the man changed his story during questioning. The sheriff said there were also no reports of a missing child on Thursday night.
