ELIZABETHTON — A man working on a tree-cutting crew was injured Wednesday afternoon when a dead tree that had not been cut by the crew fell and struck the man on the head.

Sgt. Travis Ludlow of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene on Byers Road near Holston Mountain Road around 2:45 p.m. When he arrived, he found one of the lumbermen lying in the road. A dead tree was lying in a ditch near him.

The injured man was identified by co-workers as Mark Bruner of Greeneville. Ludlow said Bruner was disoriented and kept asking what had happened. He was checked by the Carter County Rescue Squad and taken down the mountain by ambulance.

Workers told Ludlow they were not working on the tree that fell. A warning was shouted, but Bruner was still hit by the falling tree. Ludlow said Bruner was wearing his helmet at the time. He said the helmet was lying next to Bruner on the road when he arrived.

Ludlow reported that the crew worked for Trees Inc., of Houston, Texas.
