The death of a Washington County Detention Center inmate is now officially a homicide investigation, District Attorney General Ken Baldwin confirmed Friday morning.

Joseph M. Lockner, 29, 109 Sheri St. in Gray, was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor by a detention officer who was conducting rounds in Lockner’s pod. Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal released that information on Wednesday stating that Lockner was assaulted Monday afternoon.

“It is a homicide investigation now,” Baldwin said. “Once our investigation is concluded we will be taking the matter to the grand jury in January.”

Baldwin would not release further details except to say, “the suspects are the people who were in the jail cell with him.”
