Two killed in Sullivan County wreck; two injured in Carter County collision

Two people were killed and two people injured in separate traffic crashes on U.S. Highway 19E on Wednesday night, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The fatalities occurred in a crash at the intersection of U.S. 19E and Bunker Hill Road in Bluff City about 6:30 p.m., the THP said.

According to the investigating trooper, a 1996 Ford F150 pickup driven by Michael Cook, 55, Bluff City, was traveling north on U.S. 19E and swerving in the roadway, according to a witness’ statement.

Cook’s vehicle crossed the median into the southbound lanes and struck a 2014 Jeep Latitude being driven by Kelly Roberts, 30, Bluff City, head on.

Both Cook and Roberts were killed in the crash.

A short distance away in Carter County at about the same time, the THP said two people were hurt in a collision near the intersection of U.S. 19E and Keenburg Road. 

According to a press release, a Mitsubishi Montero being driving by Matthew Kent, 36, Elizabethton, was traveling south on U.S. 19E when it crossed the grass median, went airborne and struck a Nissan work van being driven by Charles Pierce, 53, Piney Flats, head on.

The THP said both Kent and Pierce were transported to Johnson City Medical Center.

Kent was charged with vehicular assault as a result of DUI-third offense, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain lane and having no insurance.
