A policeman patrolling downtown Johnson City on Friday night encountered a man threatening a group with a handgun, leading to a foot chase and eventual arrest, police said in a news release.

About 11:30 p.m., patrolman Nate Carman was in the Downtown Square parking lot off State of Franklin Road when he spotted the man arguing with a group of men. Carman reported that he saw the man lift his shirt to show a black handgun while threatening the group.

Carman called for the man to stop and show his hands, but the man took off.

Christian Sweet, 21, 818 Hamilton St., was arrested after a short foot chase. Carman said the loaded weapon was found nearby, where Sweet had discarded it. Carman also reported that Sweet smelled strongly of alcohol and was in possession of a marijuana blunt.

Sweet was charged with felony reckless endangerment, possession of a handgun while under the influence, evading arrest and simple possession of marijuana. He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $13,000 bond with a Sessions Court hearing set for Monday.
