Washington County, Virginia, authorities said they don’t believe the public is in danger from any suspect “on the loose” after three bodies were found at an Abingdon home Saturday morning.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it does not appear there are any suspects at large and the incident is contained within the residence,” Sheriff Fred Newman said in a press release over the weekend. The bodies were found at a Breckenridge Court residence, located near Watauga Road.

The victims were identified as:

  • James Robert Grace, 73,18128 Brekenridge Court, Abingdon, Virginia.
  • Carolyn Christine Grace, 64, 18128 Brekenridge Court Abingdon, Virginia.
  • Jamie Grant Grace, 38, 178 Rogers Drive, Apt 19C Tazewell, Virginia.

Investigators said someone called 911 around 11:47 a.m. Saturday to report seeing a body lying near the door way of the Brekenridge Court home.  When sheriff deputies arrived, they found two more bodies, also near the doorway. A handgun, knife and baseball bat were located near the bodies, but Newman did not say if they had visible evidence on them that could indicate they were used in the killings.

Neighbors told investigators they heard what they thought were fireworks around 10:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators said those noises were now believed to have been gunshots.

Newman said all three bodies were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for autopsies.

“Once these results are received by our agency we will have a much clearer picture of what occurred,” he said.
