Police say a man who was vandalizing cars with broken bottles tried to flee from them and hit more vehicles in the process.

The incident happened in February, a release said, and started with an unknown disturbance call at Monacan Apartments, 2808 Plymouth Road. There, witnesses told officers that Shawn Thrift, 33, 3238 Wil Rho Circle, Kingsport, had gotten into a fight with another resident and was using broken bottles to damage vehicles in the parking lot, a news release said.

Thrift tried to flee when officers arrived, the release said, but struck five parked cars in the process before leaving the parking lot.

Officers were able to arrest Thrift on Tuesday and charged him with reckless endangerment, simple assault, felony vandalism and leaving the scene of the accident after he was released from the Washington County Detention Center on unrelated charges.

Thrift was being held on $50,000 and $1,500 bonds at the Carter County Detention Center in Elizabethton, and his arraignment is pending.
