ABINGDON, Va. — A 15-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon when he slid off a car while “hood surfing” and was struck by the vehicle.

According to a press release from the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred about 3 p.m. on Childress Hollow Road, near Spring Valley Road.

Trooper J.P. Peck said a 16-year-old Washington County girl was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier on Childress Hollow when her passenger got out of the vehicle and crawled onto the hood with the intention of "hood surfing." The Cavalier was traveling along Childress Hollow below the posted speed limit of 35 mph when the boy slid off the hood. The teenage driver was unable to brake in time and struck the boy, who died at the scene.

After consultation with the Washington County Commonwealth's Attorney, the girl was cited for reckless driving.

The incident remains under investigation.
