A 2-year-old child died Saturday after being pulled from a Washington County creek.

A Washington County Sheriff’s Office news release reported that rescuers found the toddler in a creek about a mile from where the child went missing.

EMS personnel immediately began CPR and other interventions, the release said, and the child was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center in critical condition. The child was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived at a Ford Creek Road address about 12 minutes after the call was made at 12:50. Members of several responding agencies began a search, and the press release said the child was found at 2:12 p.m.

In addition to the sheriff’s officers, Johnson City EMS, the EMS Swift Water Rescue Team, Tennessee Highway Patrol and members of Fall Branch, Gray, Sulphur Springs and Watauga volunteer fire departments responded to help in the search.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said the investigation was ongoing.
