Man, woman charged with abusing 18-month-old baby

ELIZABETHTON — A man and a woman were arrested this week on charges of abusing an 18-month-old child. The charges came after presentments to a Carter County grand jury May 2.

Alexandria Ufalla Nelson, 18, Bristol, and Cory Brett Scalf, 20, 621 S. Roan St., were each charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.

Capt. Shane Darling, Commander of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Elizabethton Police Department, said the incident began when police were called to the Elizabethton Walmart on Dec. 19.

According to the grand jury presentment, Nelson and Scalf are accused of “knowingly abusing” the child “In such a manners to adversely affect the child’s health and welfare” and resulted in “serious bodily injury to the child.”

Nelson and Scalf were held in the Carter County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond apiece.
