Two arrested in Johnson City on multiple felony drug charges

A reported red light violation led to drug charges for a man and a woman in Johnson City on Friday.

According to a news release from the Johnson City Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Dakota Wayne Shasteen, of Erwin, after it made a left turn at a red light at the intersection of University Parkway and Cherokee Road. The news release said that when approaching the vehicle, police noticed the smell of marijuana and found 27-year-old Shameika Kierra Austin, Johnson City, sitting in the back seat.

In a search of the vehicle, police said, they found 66.1 grams of marijuana and an additional 109.6 grams of marijuana in Austin's purse.

Shasteen was charged with felony possession of a schedule VI drug for resale, driving on a suspended license, red light violation and unlawful drug paraphernalia. Austin was charged with felony possession of a schedule VI drug for resale and unlawful drug paraphernalia.

Both Shasteen and Austin were transported to Washington County Detention Center. Shasteen was held on $12,000 bond and Austin on $11,000 bond. Their arraignments are set for Monday, April 9, in General Sessions Court.
