Johnson City police said a man with outstanding warrants from Unicoi County was arrested after officers determined he lied about his identification to avoid arrest.

William D. Abner, 26, 2700 W. Market St., Johnson City, was charged with one count of false reporting.

The arrest occurred Thursday when officers tried to serve warrants at West Market Street and John Exum Parkway during a traffic stop. The woman driving the car had warrants for her arrest and during the investigation, officers determined the woman’s husband — Abner — also had active warrants.

Abner was not present at that time, but was dropped off at the scene while officers were still there.

According to a press release, Abner used a false name when he first talked to the officers, but they were able to confirm his identity. He was arrested and transported to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held in lieu of $5,000 bond.
