An intoxicated man backed his car into a police cruiser after driving the wrong way on the Bristol Highway and crashing into a car dealership early Friday morning, Johnson City police said in a news release.

About 2:40 a.m., police responded to a witness’ report that a vehicle was traveling on the wrong side of the highway near local car dealerships when Capt. Brian Rice spotted Justin K. Fleenor’s Ford Taurus headed toward him in the wrong lane. The car immediately made a U-turn and headed back toward Piney Flats, according to a police report filed by officer Adam Lunceford.

Rice caught up with Fleenor’s car just near Champion Chevrolet Cadillac with Lunceford right behind him.

Just as Lunceford was about to attempt a traffic stop, the car swerved from the road and crashed into Champion’s front gate. Lunceford said the gate was destroyed.

Both Rice and Lunceford turned on their blue lights as they pulled in behind the Taurus. As they left their cruisers, Fleenor put the car in reverse and rammed into Rice’s patrol car behind him. Lunceford said the crash appeared to be intentional.

After arresting Fleenor, police searched his car and found a handgun in the glove box, Lunceford wrote in the report. They also found that Fleenor’s car had a flat front tire and was covered in mud from crossing the median near Knob Creek Dock Road.

Fleenor, 29, 359 Spangler Road, Piney Flats, was charged with DUI, aggravated assault, possession of a handgun while intoxicated and failure to comply with the financial responsibility law. He was held in the Washington County Detention Center on $32,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Monday.
