No one was hurt in a crash involving a school bus on West Walnut Street Monday afternoon, Johnson City Police said at the scene.

Lt. Becky West said bus 6-06 and a black Ford Edge were the only two vehicles involved in the crash, which was reported near 401 W. Walnut St. about 3:30. The bus remained stopped behind the Edge while officers investigated the scene, and the SUV’s back bumper, tail light and back window had been broken.

West said the crash was still under investigation and she was still interviewing witnesses as of Monday afternoon.

Director of Schools Steve Barnett said he arrived at the scene about 3:50. He said 13 elementary and middle school students were on the bus at the time of the crash, and the bus had likely left Indian Trail Middle School at about 2:50 to take students home in the South Side neighborhood.

A second bus arrived to take the remaining children home, and Barnett said staff worked to alert parents to the situation, which is the protocol for school bus crashes.

“We want to make sure the school knows and that the parents know their child is safe, and if they’re not safe, we want to let the parents know what’s going on,” Barnett said.
