A Blountville man spent the day after Christmas behind bars after police arrested him and charged him with shoplifting more than $1,000 worth in merchandise last month.

According to information released by the Johnson City Police Department, 22-year-old Preston Wood, 129 Valley View Private Drive, was charged with shoplifting over $1,000 and vandalism under $1,000.

The arrest follows an investigation into a shoplifting incident at Walmart, 3111 Browns Mill Road, on Nov. 29 in which a thief reportedly pried open a merchandise case and stole several electronics items amounting to $1,100.

Wood left the store and fled the scene, police said, and his alleged involvement in other large retail thefts throughout the Tri-Cities led investigators to develop him as a suspect.

Wood turned himself in at the Washington County Detention Center on Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was held on $6,000 bond and arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Sessions Court.
