KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man who was wanted for a head-on Stone Drive collision that occurred in December — when he was reportedly behind the wheel while "high as a kite" — has now been arrested following a separate alleged incident of driving under the influence.

The original wreck occurred on Dec. 11 at approximately 8 p.m. Edward L. Hutchins, 32, was driving a 2000 Buick LeSabre westbound on West Stone Drive and approaching Sherman Place. Kingsport police reported that his car, which also contained a female passenger, veered sharply left and crossed the center turn lane, into the path of oncoming eastbound traffic.

Hutchins vehicle struck a 2001 Toyota 4Runner head on. The driver of the Toyota, Hutchins and Hutchins' passenger were all injured in the massive collision, which forced the closure of West Stone Drive for more than two hours.

An affidavit filed in Kingsport court states that EMS personnel could smell alcohol on Hutchins while transporting him to the hospital, with one EMT describing him as "high as a kite." Hutchins' passenger also allegedly told investigating officers that she and Hutchins had each drunk whiskey and taken Subutex earlier in the evening.

More on the charges from the Kingsport Times-News.
