A lifetime registered sex offender with a history of sexual battery and attempted rape convictions remained jailed Saturday awaiting a court hearing after he was found living in a tent near a day care center in east Johnson City.

Working with the Tennessee Department of Correction, Johnson City police arrested Lemar Q. Gipson, 53, charging him with violating sex offender residential work restrictions.

Police met with Gipson’s probation officer on Monday on East Oakland Avenue, where Gipson was living in a tent 236 feet from the property line of a day care center, police said.

Gipson’s previous convictions (pdf) include sexual battery in November 2009, criminal attempt to commit rape in May 1999, sexual battery in March 1998, sexual battery in November 1993 and sexual battery in October 1993, according to Tennessee’s Sex Offender Registry website.

Gipson was held in the Washington County Detention Center on $5,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance Tuesday.
