Despite assault, rape, police say Kingsport Greenbelt has 'safe track record'

KINGSPORT — Despite two recent attacks on women along the Kingsport Greenbelt — one a violent robbery, the other a rape in broad daylight — police say the public shouldn't "paint the entire park as a dangerous place."

A lengthy Tuesday morning press release from the Kingsport Police Department presents three years of data from the 9-mile recreational area, concluding that "the chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime along the trail, especially by a complete stranger, are extremely low."

On June 24, a woman was assaulted on the Greenbelt. At approximately 5:15 p.m. she was walking in the Branch Street area when she spotted an unknown man following behind, prompting her to stop and rest on a bench.

More on the Greenbelt from the Kingsport Times-News.
