Staff Report • Mar 25, 2015 at 1:00 AM

KINGSPORT — A Kingsport woman has been arrested after allegedly handling a .357 Magnum while distraught and intoxicated, firing one round through her apartment wall and nearly shooting a neighbor.

According to records at the Kingsport Police Department, Kathryn M. Chapin, 41, was arrested Monday on a warrant for felony reckless endangerment. It was spurred by an incident that occurred Feb. 21 at her residence, 1701 North John B. Dennis Highway, apartment 16.

A KPD report from that day states officers responded to River Edge Apartments shortly after 10 p.m., following a call of shots fired. Police found Chapin inside her apartment, "crying, intoxicated, but unharmed." She told police she had been depressed over personal issues.

Records state that Chapin owns a Lawman MK III .357 Magnum. She told police that as she stood in the kitchen and attempted to unload the handgun, "it accidentally discharged."

More on the wayward bullet from the Kingsport Times-News.
