Hemp planting

Nathan Baker • Apr 20, 2016 at 4:31 PM
Washington County's only legal hemp farmer, Wayne Smith, planted his crop Tuesday evening with the help of his hired hand, Mirko Heber. The hand-pushed seed spreader and harrow pulled behind an ATV used by the pair was much less labor intensive than the copper tube and hoe used by Smith and Heber's father, Walt, last year. Using 10 pounds of the seeds left over from the 27.5 pounds he received from state last year, Smith said he hoped to get a jump on planting instead of waiting for more seeds to be delivered. Last year, farmers didn't receive their seeds until June, a full six weeks into the optimal hemp growing season.
