ELIZABETHTON — Albee Weiss hit a first-inning grand slam, and he wasn’t done.

The Elizabethton clean-up hitter hit another home run in the second inning, and the Twins defeated Burlington 8-5 in an Appalachian League game Wednesday night at Northeast Community Credit Union Park.

The Twins (12-9) stayed on the heels of front-running Johnson City (12-8) in the West Division.

Weiss finished 2 for 4 with five RBIs as the Twins built a 7-1 lead after three innings and made it stand up. It was the second two-homer game this year for the 23-year-old Weiss. He has six homers and 15 RBIs on the season.

Elizabethton’s Max Smith drove in a pair of runs with a single and a sacrifice fly.

Tyler Benninghoff (1-1) worked five strong innings to get the win on the mound. He gave up five hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts. Dylan Thomas worked the final two innings to get his second save.

For Burlington, Burle Dixon led the way with three hits. He also drove in three runs, thanks in part to a two-run double.
