Wind knocks out power, closes school

Johnson City Press • Jan 23, 2019 at 11:10 AM

Windy conditions and wet soil downed trees and limbs locally, leading to damage and power outages.

Washington County Schools administrators closed South Central Elementary School at 11 a.m. and sent children home when the school’s electricity went out.

BrightRidge spokesperson Tim Whaley said outages were reported along Cherokee Road and in the south end of the county near State Highway 107.

“Falling trees and tree limbs will continue to impact service throughout the day as windy conditions are forecast to persist through the evening,” Whaley said in an emailed statement.

At 11 a.m., 2,357 power outages were listed on the utility’s live outage map.

Whaley said work crews and contractors were deployed to restore power to those areas.
