The department said Elizabethton and other communities in the region have decided that not opening pools this summer “is a way our communities can help stop the spread” of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
‘We take the safety of our patrons and staff at all of our facilities very seriously. In this COVID-19 pandemic, we are dealing with a lot of unknowns. As a department, our goal is to provide recreation while trying to limit the spreading of COVID-19.”
The pool, in the Joe LaPorte Recreation Facility next to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, is normally one of the most popular parts of the Elizabethton Parks facilities. It is an Olympic-sized swimming pool featuring two diving boards, a fenced-in toddler’s pool, two covered pavilions and large grassy areas for sunbathing. The facility is within a fenced and gated area.
