Blasting three home runs in three at-bats, Potter fueled Unaka to a 7-5 victory over Cosby.
As a result, the Lady Rangers (23-21) will host Tellico Plains in Friday’s sectional round, which has Cosby (15-9) visiting Sale Creek. A state berth will be on the line in both contests.
Unaka finished with six fewer hits (8) than the Lady Eagles (14), but Potter’s power more than compensated for the deficit. Totaling five RBIs, she broke a 1-1 second-inning tie with a two-run homer, clubbed another two-run shot in the fourth to lift her team to a 4-3 lead and led off the top of the seventh with a solo job.
The last of those round-trippers handed the Rangers a 6-4 edge. Madison Pierce singled and eventually came home on a two-out error to make it a three-run game.
With three hits, including an Allie Dyke double, the Lady Eagles scored once and had runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the inning. From there, however, Sadie Shoun retired two straight batters (strikeout, fly-out) to extinguish the threat.
Shoun pitched five innings in relief of starter Kailey Wilson, nabbing the victory. She was touched for nine hits, but surrendered just two runs.
Shoun, Taylor Shanks and Noelle Collins doubled for Unaka, with Shanks also collecting an RBI.
Cosby’s Chloe Sutton, Harlee Taylor, Breeze Childress, Maggie Humphrey and Daycee Weeks had two hits apiece. Childress accounted for a triple.
