Lady Bucs topple error prone Raiders in 1-A softball

KINGSPORT — Taking advantage of nine Sullivan North fielding errors, the University High Lady Buccaneers took a 10-0 five inning, mercy-rule victory in the District 1-A softball tournament played at Sullivan North High School.

The Lady Bucs rapped out just six hits but a myriad of miscues by the Lady Raiders aided the UH cause greatly. The Bucs scored three runs in the top of the second inning after Carlie Bragg opened with a walk.

She stole second base and came around to score after two throwing errors for a 1-0 lead. One out later, Catie Leonard was hit by a pitch from North starting pitcher Brooklyn Robinson. Bucs lead-off hitter Emily Morgan singled and pitcher Avery Kibelbek reached on an infield error with Morgan scoring on the play.

Katie Stancil plated the third run of the inning with a sharp base hit to center field for a 3-0 Bucs advantage.

Kibelbek went the distance giving up no runs on five hits. She walked two and struck out four. Lady Bucs head coach Keith Jeffers appreciated her efforts saying, “She has improved all year. We have such a young team and she is a freshman. At the first of the year we struggled but she is starting to come into her own.”

University High put the game away in the fourth inning with seven runs on three hits and North committing four errors. Morgan walked and Kibelbck reached on an infield hit. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base.

Another wild pitch brought Morgan home and moved Kibelbek to third and she scored on a wild throw for a 5-0 lead. Stancil collected her second hit of the game – a double to center field — and she scored on an error after a bunt from Bragg.

Morgan, batting for the second time in the inning, hit a two-run double for the final runs.

Kibelbek ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the fourth when North loaded the bases on a walk, an error and a single from Autumn Crawford. Kibelbek induced Presley Crawford to tap back to the circle for a fielder's choice and she retired Kaitlyn Lemmon on a fly ball to center.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bucs turned a double play.

Three games are on tap for Tuesday with Unaka taking on University High at 5 p.m. followed by Cloudland against North Greene at 6:30 p.m. and the losers of those two games playing at 8 p.m.

Kenzie Birchfield and Karah Fields combined on a perfect game in the Lady Highlanders’ romp over the Lady Bulldogs.

There were plenty of offensive stars for Cloudland with Fields hitting two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring twice in the lead-off spot.

Jasmine Birchfield went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored. Taylor Hicks and Gracie Cook all had triples and drove in two runs. Krisi Bare had two doubles and also finished with two RBIs.
