Unicoi County earns wins in softball, baseball

ERWIN — Carly Kinser went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the second inning, to lead Unicoi County to a 9-6 victory over Elizabethton in Three Rivers Conference softball action Tuesday at the Lady Devils Diamond.

Samanta Chavez was 2 for 3 and scored three runs, while Betsabe Chavez drove in two runs. Halie Hawkins and Cassie Selvage each had two hits.

Allee Griffith got the win after giving up seven hits over seven innings, while Hannah Edwards suffered the loss for the Lady Cyclones.

Down 9-1, Elizabethton rallied with five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Haley Fair’s three-run home run.

Kaylen Shell had a solo homer in the second to give the Lady Cyclones a 1-0 lead at that point. Maggie Johnson had two hits and Autumn Hensley finished with two RBIs.

Daniel Boone 3, Lawerence County 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C—Megan Ackerman hurled a complete game and Jaycie Jenkins knocked in three runs to key a Lady Trailblazers victory.

Ackerman amassed seven strikeouts and limited Lawrence County to five hits. Jenkins came through with the essential hits, providing a two-run, second-inning single and knocking in a run with a fourth-inning base hit.

Jenkins and Brylee Mesusan topped an eight-hit Boone effort, each going 2 for 4.

Lady Blazers got things moving in the second inning. Jaycie Jenkins singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.

Sullivan East 14, Sullivan Central 4

BLUFF CITY—Ripping two home runs and a double in a 3-for-4, 2-run performance, Kylee Wolfe accumulated six RBIs.

Chelsea Sams homered en route to a 3-for-4 showing that included four RBI and two runs. Winning pitcher Katelyn Loudy batted 3 for 3, scored four times and knocked in a pair of runs.

The Lady Cougars’ Courtney Willis belted a two-run homer.

Unaka 14, University High 7

Lilie Kiser homered, tripled, recorded four RBIs and collected two runs in a 4-for-5 performance for the Lady Rangers, who erupted for eight first-inning runs.

Erika Potter and Noelle Collins each doubled in two-hit outputs for Unaka. Kendall Bare supplied three RBIs and Kailey Wilson went the distance from the pitching circle, yielding four earned runs.

Cyndia Dobbins and Avery Kibelbeck had two hits apiece for UH, with Dobbins socking a triple. Emily Morgan had a double and two RBIs.

Volunteer 8, Science Hill 2

CHURCH HILL — The Lady Falcons scored all eight runs in the sixth inning to down the Lady ’Toppers.

Aliyah Crawley had a two-run home run to highlight the inning. Audrey Evans added a two-run single, and Allie Chandler followed with a RBI single. All three of them had two hits, while Raenah Barton went 3 for 3.

Sydney Allen was the winning pitcher.

Jannon Glaspie had a two-run single in the fourth for Science Hill’s scores.

Twin Springs, Va. 7, Sullivan South 1

KINGSPORT — Aubrey Powers threw a complete game as the Lady Titans defeated the Lady Rebels.

Powers went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and drove in three runs. Chenoa Dean was 2 for 4 with a double and Natalie Adams batted 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Tara Shivley had four strikeouts and four scoreless innings, going 5 1/3 overall in the loss. Bradlie Warner went 2 for 3 with a triple and drove in South’s lone run. Allison Chapman and Shivley each went 2 for 3.

Johnson County 9, Happy Valley 3

Maddie Edington went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Lady Longhorns over the Lady Warriors.

Hannah Brooks, Natalie Winters and Abby Cornett each drove in two runs, while Brooks and Lindsey Wills each scored twice.

Bella Miller was the winning pitcher, giving up 11 hits, but just one earned run.

Laura Rice was 4 for 4 and Allie Grindstaff was 2 for 3 to lead Happy Valley. Abby Holt threw six innings before giving way to Olivia Absher.


Johnson County 24, University High 5

Hannah Brooks homered, totaled six RBIs and handled the pitching chores for the Lady Longhorns, who cut loose for 21 hits.

Brooks batted 4 for 5, Emmy Miller went 3 for 4 with a triple and both players scored four times. Strong games also came from Maddi Eddington (3 for 5, double, 2 runs) and Abby Cornett (3 for 4, 2 runs).

Avery Kibelbeck accounted for two of the Lady Buccaneers’ five hits. 


Unicoi County 11, Happy Valley 6

ERWIN—Keaton Casey pitched the Blue Devils to victory and helped them out offensively as well, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Allowing four hits, Casey registered a half-dozen strikeouts.

L.J. Mitchell went 3 for 3 in the win, which included a 3-for-4 showing by Caleb Crain. Drew Keasling batted 2 for 2.

University High 11, Sullivan North 1

KINGSPORT—With Henry Borthwick batting 3 for 3 with four RBIs, the Buccaneers cruised to a five-inning Watauga Valley conquest of Sullivan North.

Essau Byrd added three RBIs in a 1-for-3 showing and UH got three walks and a pair of runs from Jacob Pealer.

Going 1 for 3 with two runs and a walk, Brant Hare also pitched four innings for the win. Michael Degennaro closed the game with a scoreless fifth.

Elizabethton 10, Johnson County 4

ELIZABETHTON—The Cyclones used a six-run fifth inning to break up a close contest with the Longhorns.

Ashton Wilson had a two-run single and Evan Carter an RBI triple in Elizabethton’s big inning, which made it a 9-3 game.

Matthew Dailey batted 2 for 2 with two walks and a pair of RBIs for ’Betsy, with Jaden Anderson (double) contributing a 2-for-4 effort. Dailey got the win from the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) and totaling five strikeouts over six innings.

The Longhorns’ Petie Pavusek doubled, scored twice and finished 2 for 3.

Sullivan East 10, Sullivan Central 4

BLOUNTVILLE—Driving in four runs, Perry Casaday finished 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs for the Patriots.

Eli Milhorn and Dylan Bartley each went 2 for 3, with Milhorn adding two runs and pair of walks. Winning pitcher Dylan White batted 2 for 4 and scored three times in the win, which included two runs, two RBIs and pair of RBIs from Brantley Ellis. Seth Chafin contributed a two-run double.

Cracking a pair of doubles, Mason Buckland led the Cougars with a 4-for-4, 2-run day. Trey Sells went 2 for 3.

Unaka 5, Cloudland 0

ROAN MOUNTAIN — John Ramsey threw 18 strikeouts in a two-hit shutout for the Rangers. Bryson Street drove in three runs and Davy Ensor had two hits to lead Unaka offensively.

Dillon Johnson, threw five innings for the Highlanders, and had both of their hits.

North Greene 9, Hampton 4

HAMPTON — Chance Campbell, Kole Zierkle, Micah Jones and Chase Malone all had multiple hits for the Huskies in the win over the Bulldogs.

Brayden Garber went the distance, giving four runs (three earned), seven hits and one walk.

Freshman Caleb Royston took the loss, giving up five runs over 4 1/3 innings. Weston Street went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Dalton Rouse and Parker Henry also ended with a RBI. 


University High 9, Hampton 0

HAMPTON — Senior Malachi Heath had a hat trick with fellow senior Walker Page assisting on two of the three goals.

Page added two goals, one from a penalty kick after being fouled hard in the box. He finished with three assist, the other to Moses Rathburn, who ended with two goals.

Andrew Jarvis and Lane Caughron each had a goal, while Bracken Burns helped hold the defensive together and had an assist.

The Bucs (5-1) play at Chuckey-Doak on Thursday.


Veritas Christian, N.C. 3, Providence Academy 2

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Maddie France scored both of the Lady Knights’ goals. Victoria Davis assisted on the first goal, which came in the 23rd minute, and Abby Loran, assisted on the second goal, which came in the 70th minute. Goalkeeper Callie Burchette made four saves.
