Science Hill and Unaka played a game with a time limit, and the hitters made the at-bats count.

When it was over, the Lady Hilltoppers owned a tight 11-9 win in the East Tennessee Classic softball tournament Thursday at Metro-Kiwanis Park.

“We swung the bats well, and Unaka did, too,” said Science Hill head coach Jerry Higgins. “Either go zero to zero, or a lot to a lot.”

In the nightcap, Science Hill improved to 7-1 on the season with a 20-0 three-inning rout of University High.

In games on the lower field, Farragut topped Crockett 7-3 before Crockett bounced back to beat Unaka, 12-1.

Science Hill got rolling early. After a single from Jannon Glaspie, Kasey Bennett torched one over the center field fence. One out later, Zoey Cooper went yard for a quick 3-0 advantage.

Freshman Abigail Taylor added an RBI double the second inning. She also had an RBI triple in the fifth, and finished with three hits. Glaspie, Mackenzie Powell and Jayden Salts each added two hits.

Emma Cullop made what turned out to be a game-saving catch in left field. The diving gem cut short a Unaka rally in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“That was a great play,” said Higgins. “She’s another freshman.”

For Unaka, Madison Pierce hit a two-run homer and finished with two hits. Leadoff batter Sadie Shoun had three hits. Kendall Bare also had two hits as did Tayla Potter and Lilly Kiser.

“I was very pleased,” said Unaka head coach Kenneth Chambers. “We’ve got a lot of young players, and the young ones have been hitting the ball. If we keep hitting consistent like we have been, we’ve have a good chance of being competitive in our conference. Overall it was a great game for us.

“We came here to try to get better. Any time you’re playing Science Hill or David Crockett, you have to come with your A game just to compete.”
