The United States’ Southeast team was kept off the scoreboard till the top of the sixth inning. The girls from Gray avoided the shutout when Ava Saul single’s brought home Riley Croley, then a Kayleigh Musser fielder’s choice scored Josie Jenkins.
Saul batted 2 for 3, Croley added a 1-for-2 showing and Boone drew four bases on balls.
Layritz, which hails from Victoria, British Columbia, grabbed a 3-0 third-inning advantage, pushing across runs on a Hannah Southern sacrifice fly, passed ball and wild pitch. Two singles, a pair of walks, two hit-by-pitches and an error made for a four-run fourth.
Southern topped Canada offensively with a 2-for-3 effort. Anderson recorded six strikeouts.
Dropping to 0-2 in pool play, Daniel Boone returns to action today against Kirkland, Tunkhannock — the U.S. East representative. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (EDT).
