In the first game of pool play in the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon, Daniel Boone was defeated 9-5 by Kirkland, Washington, on Wednesday night.

Boone will play again Thursday as it will take on Layritz, Canada at 4 p.m. (EDT).

Boone fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning, but battled back to tie with two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second. Anna Richardson hit a two-run single and Kayleigh Quesinberry added an RBI hit.

However, Washington took advantage of several defensive misplays by Boone and scored six times in the top of the third inning to pull away.

In the fourth inning, Boone’s Kayleigh Musser drove in a run with a bases-loaded single to make it 9-4. Boone added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and had two runners on base with nobody out, but couldn’t keep the rally alive.

Quesinberry had three hits to lead Boone. Kyleigh Bacon and Josie Jenkins each had two hits as Boone’s top three hitters went 7 for 9.

Boone received a defensive gem from shortstop Jenkins, who made a snow-cone catch of a line drive and stepped on second base for an inning-ending double play in the first inning.
